How noisy is the temperature reading? Is this just a "threshold is too close" problem or a "spikes on the temp reading" problem?

I'll have to look but I was under the impression that most wall-wart switchers are elv or selv. If that is true have a good ground connection between the supply and the usb port and you shouldn't need any opto-isolation. I also work with nfc. NFC on a battery is hard to do. The battery is conductive stuff. It acts like a shorted winding in an air-core transformer and sucks up all the energy.
