I think I've found an even better method:
The gold colored discs at the positive ends are 15mm diameter by 3mm thick, gold plated rare earth magnets. 2x 3mm = 6mm which happens to be the difference in length between AAA and AA cells! The magnets are slightly larger in diameter than AA cells, but not enough for it to be a problem.
Other than the cost and waiting for the magnets to arrive, I think this is a much better solution - it's a lot less fiddly getting the AAAs in the right spot - although it still isn't quite as nice as just slotting a couple of AA cells in.
You can use the configuration utility to change parameters such as the charging rate and capacity limit to better suit AAA cells if you like:
