Support for C & D Cells

Postby Mark » Sun Oct 20, 2013 1:16 am

Although it would obviously make the charger much larger, it'd be nice to have a version that supported C & D cells. A maximum charging rate of 2 amps would still be plenty for D cells.

Even better would be to do something like the Maha C808M which can do up to 8 D cells at the same time. If it were possible to take one of those and replace the controller with our own design, add higher discharge rates, add a bigger LCD (touch) screen, SD Card slot and a USB port for monitoring and I think we'd have a pretty much unbeatable charger! `:-)`

Of course, it would still be good to have a smaller version for up to 4 AA/AAA cells for traveling!

Now there are adapters that mount into the C9000 for D. Maybe there are C's too.

Consider designing to allow those adapters to function fine in the dream charger. Then one only needs to purchase the accessory to support D (& maybe C) batteries too.

That's not a bad idea! The adapters for the C9000 allow for the use of both C and D cells.

Depending on the size of the charger and the spacings, you might only be able to use 2 adapters at a time. They might also obscure the screen and the buttons, but this would be less of a concern if you're able to control/monitor the charger via a connected PC. The adapters would also add some resistance to the electrical path, so that may be an issue.
